Parution d'un article dans le n°41 de la revue Ex-Position : "Creolization, Translation, and the Poetics of Worldness : On Wu Ming-yi's French Translation" Feature Topic: Non-Wordly Literature (Editors: Lee Yu-lin, Chen Chun-yen) Sommaire complet du numéro et lien vers l'article : http://ex-position.org/?page_id=1908&fbclid=IwAR0dRbwZK_hWALhGct5Jb8u5L2bLSO1KSZmc_Ci-NsK_b-NRj-rSuo3hTHE Abstract This article attempts to provide a reflection on both the practice and the ontology of translation through a discussion of my experience translating Taiwanese writer Wu Ming-Yi ’ s fiction. In some of his works, Wu Ming-Yi, like some other authors (such as Wang Chen-ho) before him, uses a mix of languages, including Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Hokkien, and even fictional languages. Faced with such a flood of languages, the translator often finds herself/himself at wits ’ end and must develop original strategies to respond to this challenge. The strategy...

Article paru dans le troisième volume de la revue Journal of Translation Studies (published for the Department of Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong) Chinese Dreams: (Self-)Orientalism and Post-Orientalism in the Reception and Translation of Liu Cixin’s Three-Body Trilogy Gwennaël Gaffric University of Lyon Abstract After receiving the Hugo Award in 2015 for the English translation of The Three-Body Problem, Liu Cixin’s Three-Body trilogy and its translations into a large number of languages have been a massive success, prompting many reactions and much praise. In this article, I attempt to discuss first the global processes of translation and reception of Liu’s novels beyond China. I particularly focus on the Orientalist imaginary conveyed by the publication of the trilogy, at a time when Chinese science fiction has become a tool for the Chinese soft power strategy based on the culturalist and nationalist discourse of the “Chinese Dream.” I also examine the r...

Chapitre d'ouvrage collectif : 5. Indigenizing queer fiction and queer theories: A study on Chi Ta-wei’s sci-fi novels GWENNAËL GAFFRIC (Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3) in Dr. Chang-Bi yu and Dr. Lin Pei-yin (eds.), Positioning Taiwan in a Global Context: Being and Becoming, Routledge.   Abstract of the book: This book examines the various aspects of modern Taiwanese culture through the prism of global cultural interactions.  Instead of considering Taiwan a product of transience, displacement, or crossing, it highlights Taiwan’s subjectivity, viewing the island’s development as a site of a global cultural circuit that epitomizes both the resistance and negotiation in the process of cultural flows, feedback loops, and global imperialism. The fourteen chapters by scholars from and outside of Taiwan altogether investigate the multi-layered and multidirectional interplays between the island and the outside world and explore the impact of complex cultu...
